News conference held by Donald Johnston, Minister for Economic Development; W.M. Evans, Director of the National Research Council of Canada's Space Policy Division; James Beggs, Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration of the United States of America (NASA); and [Philip Colbertson], Deputy Associate Administrator of NASA. In a bilingual opening statement, Johnston announces cabinet approval of an additional $122.2 million for Canada's federal Space Expenditure Program, outlines the highlights of the space program and expounds on Canada's space technology industry and the Canadarm project. A brief question period follows, which is answered in part by Evans who focuses on the NRC's viewpoint regarding military applications of Canada's work in space; and Canada's interest in utilizing United States satellite systems. Beggs then presents a briefing on the new United States space station project which involves participation from Canada and several other countries. Questions are then fielded on: industrial and commercial development in space; the finance program for the United States space station project; and the significance to NASA of Canada's contribution with the Canadarm. <53mn>
