News conference held by the federal government and the Assembly of First Nations, concerning the report of the Special Committee on Indian Self-Government. The panel consists of Harold Cardinal of the Assembly, and John Munro, Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs. In opening statements they congratulate the Special Committee on its work. Cardinal stresses the need to monitor the government's responses and the necessary follow-up. Munro speaks of the Committee's mandate and the need to focus on various categories of action called for in the recommendations. Questions are then fielded on: federal and provincial endorsement of the concept of Indian self-government; the status of band government legislation; stages leading towards acceptance of the report's recommendations as seen by each member of the panel; the proposed elimination of the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs; the bottom line for the Assembly of First Nations; acceptance of proposed new funding schemes for Indian governments and reactions of the Indian bands to the report. <30mn>
