Macdonald, David Keith Chalmers, 1920-1963 : David Keith Chalmers MacDonald was born in Glasgow on 24 July 1920. He was trained and educated as a physicist at Edinburgh University, Military College of Science at Bury, and Oxford University, where he obtained his secound doctorate in 1949. He worked at Clarendon Laboratory in Oxford and, in 1951, was invited by Gerhard Herzberg to start a low-temperature laboratory at the National Research Council in Ottawa. He accepted the task and came to Canada the same year. MacDonald was leader of the laboratory in low temperature and solid state physics at NRC until his death in 1963, at age 43. During his long illness, he never ceased to work at a very fast rate. He published 5 books and numerous articles in scientific journals. From 1955 onwards, he taught at University of Ottawa and was Honorary Chairman of Department of Physics. He was also involved in intiating young people to science and was often invited to talk about science through many radio and television broadcasts. MacDonald was elected at the Royal Society (London, England) and received the Gold Medal of the Canadian Association of Physicists in 1960. Beside his narrow research on low-temperature physics, Brownian motion, fluctuations and electron transport, David Keith Chalmers MacDonald was an scholar with a broad vision, who increased Canadian interest in physics.
