Series consists of one file and six laboratory notebooks created or maintained by the Ceramics and Road Materials Division and its precursors.

The file contains a copy of the Mines Branch memorandum no. 5 Pottery Clays in Canada by J. Keele, as well as correspondence and a report pertaining to a clay mine at St. Rémi d'Amherst in the province of Quebec. The mine at St. Rémi d'Amherst was of particular interest to the Ceramics Division in the Mines Branch because of the presence of kaolin, a type of residual clay.

One of the six laboratory notebooks is J. Keele's "Clay Laboratory Notes" from ca. 1915-1917. J. Keele was the Chief of the Ceramics Division at the time. The remaining five laboratory notebooks are from the Ceramic Laboratory, mostly if not entirely used by Keele's subordinate L. P. Collins, and were used to record the results of laboratory tests of clay that had been contributed by manufacturers etc. from various locations in Canada. Four of the remaining five laboratory notebooks are dated from September 13th 1923 to August 1927; the fifth is undated.

Canada. Mines Branch. Ceramics and Road Materials Division : In 1915, a fully-equipped Ceramics Laboratory was established in the basement of the Mines Branch Building on Sussex St. in Ottawa. The laboratory was established to permit a systematic investigation of Canada's clay and shale deposits, as well as the investigation of the materials used by the silicate industries in general. Investigations conducted by the Division of Ceramics varied. For instance, in 1915, J. Keele, the Chief of the Division of Ceramics, noted that there was considerable demand at the time for information on Canadian clays that would be suitable for use as burned clay tile for underdrainage of arable land. Some samples tested in the Ceramics Laboratory were collected by staff in the Mines Branch and Geological Survey; other samples were submitted by the provinces or other outside sources such as industry or individuals.
In the summer of 1916, a Road Materials Laboratory was built adjacent to the Ceramics Laboratory. In the 1920s, the two previously separate Divisions were amalgamated into the Ceramics and Road Materials Division.

The records were transferred to the National Archives in 2002 by Natural Resources Canada's CANMET Materials Technology Laboratory.
