CANADA RUSSIA '72, based on the story by Barrie Dunn, is a dramatic mini-series that tells the story of the 1972 Canada-Soviet Union hockey series. Set against the backdrop of the Cold War, the two hour and a half long episodes chronicle events from the Team Canada's breathtaking come-from-behind victory on ice, to the political manoeuvring and conflicts that raged behind the scenes. Although the tournament was originally called "The Friendship Series", it more closely resembled a war - a gigantic struggle to ascertain the superiority of either the capitalist, democratic West or the authoritarian Communist USSR. Hardly any event in Canada's history has been as exhilarating, as dramatic, as sensational, as overwhelming, as distressing, as joyous, as zealous, and as evocatively Canadian. CANADA RUSSIA '72 is presented in a fluid documentary-like style that captures all the immediacy of the 1972 hockey summit's intrigues that concluded with Paul Henderson's phenomenal winning goal in the last electrifying minute of the final game. The second part of this television mini-series starts with the Sweden-Canada friendly organized in preparation for the continuation of the Canada-Russia series in the Soviet Union. The episode continues with the historical hockey tournament in Moscow and the off-ice drama of Team Canada's battles with Russian skullduggery and the club's internal battles as the series appeared lost. The series finishes with Paul Henderson's goal which gave Canada one of its greatest hockey victories ever. Fictional dramatization is, at times, combined with archival footage from 1972. <1h 31mn 49s>
