THIS ACCESSION CONTAINS CENTRAL REGISTRY FILES FROM THE REGIONAL HEADQUARTERS, WESTERN REGION (VANCOUVER) OF THE CORRECTIONAL SERVICE OF CANADA. THE FILES DOCUMENT A WIDE RANGE OF ADMINISTRATIVE AND OPERATIONAL ACTIVITIES IN THE 1960S AND 1970S. THERE ARE FILES ON DEPARTMENTAL LIAISON WITH OUTSIDE AGENCIES IN BRITISH COLUMBIA LIKE HALFWAY HOUSES, THE SALVATION ARMY, ELIZABETH FRY SOCIETY, VANCOUVER GENERAL HOSPITAL, VANCOUVER POLICE DEPARTMENT, THE UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA AND SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY. THERE ARE ALSO MINUTES OF MEETINGS OF REGIONAL OFFICERS AND BOARDS OF INQUIRY INTO DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS, AND THE DEATHS, SUICIDES, AND ESCAPES OF INMATES. THEIR FILES DEAL WITH TEMPORARY PASSES, INVENTORY INMATES WITHIN THE CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM, INMATE POPULATION STATISTICS, AND THE FARRIS INQUIRY INTO THE HOSTAGE-TAKING INCIDENT AT THE B.C. PENITENTIARY IN 1974 WHICH RESULTED IN THE DEATH OF MARY STEINHAUSER WHO WAS EMPLOYED BY THE CORRECTIONAL SERVICE AT THE TIME. THERE ARE ALSO PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT AND PROPERTY MANAGEMENT FILES.
