Discussion by Marshall McLuhan with Robert J. Fleming on the subject of plans to create University Canada North. The university, of which Richard Rohmer was the chair, was to be in Canada's North. McLuhan talks about: how the university will be in contact with aboriginal culture; the benefit to such a university in bringing the corporate wisdom typical of a university such as the University of Toronto into contact with the oral tradition among the people of Canada's North; the need for universities to become more relevant to students; the development of universities into services for big government and big business, which deprives students of the opportunity to engage in dialogue and learn in a leisured environment; the need for universities to move away from delivering knowledge in packaged form and instead to concentrate on the core problem in any given area of learning; McLuhan's description of this core problem as ignorance; the role that new media, such as radio and television broadcasting can play in modern universities, allowing experts to discuss the essential problems in their field and allow students to engage in dialogue, rather than just imparting imformation; McLuhan's view that new media such as radio and television are making information more accessible, meaning that the role of universities can change from imparting information to discussing problems; the contribution Inuit communities can make because of the different perspective Inuit people have due to their need to understand the whole of their environment in order to survive; a discussion of wholeness as a perspective as opposed to the specialization of knowledge in universities; pattern recognition as an important learning process; the function of a university in relation to the larger community in which it resides; and the importance of the Northern community to the proposed Northern university. <30mn>
