File contains four samples of the Governor General's Academic Medal for His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston: one gold, one silver and two bronze. The obverse depicts portraits in profile of Mr. Johnston and his wife, Her Excellency Sharon Johnston. The reverse carries the Governor General's coat of arms.

The Governor General's Academic Medals recognize the outstanding scholastic achievements of students in Canada. They are awarded to the student graduating with the highest average from a high school, as well as from approved college or university programs. The levels are as follows: Bronze at the secondary school level; Collegiate Bronze at the post-secondary, diploma level (the word COLLEGE is engraved on the edge); Silver at the undergraduate level; Gold at the graduate level.
