Press conference held by the Standing Committee on Labour, Employment and Immigration to announce their report dealing with the family reunification aspect of immigration. In opening remarks, Chairman Jim Hawkes outlines the Committee's major recommendation that there be three classes for entry under the Canada Reunification Principle: 1) family; 2) assisted relative; and 3) assisted family, a new class. Stating that reunification of the nuclear family is a priority, Hawkes calls for easier qualifications relating to self-sufficiency. Committee member and Liberal Party critic Sergio Marchi stresses the importance of the family class level in offsetting the government's push towards entrepreneurship. New Democratic Party critic and Committee member Dan Heap expresses concern with the recommendations regarding earlier deadlines for decisions and notes discrepancies in processing rich and poor applications. Progressive Conservative critic and Committee member John Oostrom expresses satisfaction with the report, particularly those measures that clarify the responsibilities of sponsors.
