This is an interview of Mary Pickford, Canadian-born film star, recorded at her home, Pickfair, in Beverley Hills, California. They discuss: Mary Pickford's reminisences of Toronto and her University Avenue home; her early life in Toronto; her entrance into theatrical life at the age of five (the manager of the Valentine Stock Company had rented a room from her mother); her early years in stock theatre playing in melodramas such as Fatal Wedding, Wedded But No Wife, The Child Wife, In Convicts' Stripes and The Sewing Machine Girl; her early years in films; the Biograph Company; D.W. Griffith; her assessment of Griffith's talent; his innovations such as the cut back and the close-up; her close-up in Griffith's film Friends; her first great motion picture Tess of the Storm Country; Charlie Chaplin; Douglas Fairbanks; the formation of United Artists; Cecil B. DeMille; Ernest Lubitsch; the stars of the silent film era compared to the stars of the talkies; her view that in her lifetime she has seen the birth and the death of the motion picture; her own experience as a producer; her last film, Daddy Long Legs, in 1933; Pickfair and her plans to turn it into a museum; her feeling for Canada; her feeling that England is her grandmother, Torotno is her mother and the United States is her husband; and how she came to be called America's Sweetheart. <50mn>
