Sound recording containing: music of Serge Garant; performances by a jazz ensemble with a female vocalist; other music for harpsichord, percussion, electronic instruments; Canadian Football League coverage.~The music of Serge Garant, which was recorded for the Société Radio-Canada series L'Heure du concert, consists of two performances by an orchestra of a jazz suite in three movements. An anouncement between the two takes, apparently by a recording studio engineer or technician, gives the title as "Suite for Jazz, for orchestra", and attributes the work to Garant.~The jazz ensemble performs in a boppish style and consists of brass, woodwinds, keyboards (piano most tracks; also celesta), bass, drums, vibraphone, and female voice. Included are performances of nine compositions, of which the third and fifth are: It's All Right With Me (composed by Cole Porter), sung in French; When I Fall in Love (comp. Victor Young and Edward Heyman), sung in French and English. The other compositions are unidentified. The vocalist sings wordless scat lines on some selections. Following the music, there is the brief announcement "Ici Radio-Canada".~The other music consists of three unidentified compositions: first, for solo harpsichord (incomplete); second, for percussion ensemble; third, for electronic instruments.~The football coverage is play-by-play commentary on a Canadian Football League game between the Edmonton Eskimos and the Calgary Stampeders. <58mn 23s>

1. Other extent, physical details information: 1 audio reel : acetate, 2 tracks, 7.5 ips ; 18 cm in diam.~2. The jazz ensemble is heads out on one channel, duration 28 min. 16 sec.~3. CFL football coverage is tails out on the same channel as the jazz ensemble, duration 1 min. 14 sec.~4. Music of Serge Garant is tails out on the other channel, duration 18 min. 43 sec.~5. The other music (for harpischord, percussion, electronic instruments) follows tails out on the same channel as the Garant suite, duration 10 min. 10 sec.~6. The Garant music for L'Heure du concert is listed as "Serge Garant - Blanc et noir jazz" on the audio reel box label. The finding aid to the Serge Garant fonds, conserved at the Université de Montréal Service des archives, includes a score and sound recordings of Garant's composition Suite de jazz; the sound recordings (reference number P141/D1,10,67) are from the SRC programme "Noir et Blanc". This possibly explains the reference to "Blanc et noir jazz" on the audio reel box label.~7. The audio reel box label indicates that L'Heure du concert music was recorded on 31 January 1961. The dates of recording of the remainder of the audio reel are unknown.
