This is an obituary for Czech writer and politician Vaclav Havel after he was hospitalized with cancer in 1997, but not aired at that time because he recovered. Gray reviews highlights of Havel’s career and the Velvet Revolution which changed the political face of Czechoslovakia. Interviewees include: the former head of Czechoslovak state radio; a student; Canadian translator Paul Wilson; Father Vaclav Maly; and Rita Klimova. There is a clip of a performance by a rock band called The Plastic People of the Universe, among whose members was a Canadian translator called Paul Wilson, and which was a part of Prague’s underground culture. Also included is an excerpt of a speech by Havel accepting an honorary degree from Harvard University in June 1995, in which he says that his mother had a dream that one day he would be able to study at Harvard and that politics must do more than reflect the interests of particular groups and lobbies. <23mn 5s>
