Documentary profile of three families, all living in the Kenora-Rainy River district of Northern Ontario, caring for disabled members at home: the Yorks and the Wongs of Fort Frances, Ontario and the Popes of Nestor Falls. Peter York wrote to the CBC, desperate for help for his severely autistic and epileptic daughter Alyssa. Ontario only provides schooling for the mentally handicapped until age 21. She is very difficult to care for. Alyssa York gets most of the money the Ontario gives out for that area for such health problems. Alana Barr, who runs the Association for Community Living (ACL) in Fort Francis, says that more funding is needed for other families in the area and expresses frustration that she constantly asked to reallocate resources. Kuentin Wong, for example, has cerebral palsy and suffered brain damage at birth. In Nestor Falls, the Pope family have twin daughters, Susie and Shanna, mentally disabled from birth. Susie may be able to look after herself some day, but Shanna will not. There are interviews with teachers at the Fort Frances school where some of the children went. Also included are interviews of the parents and some caregivers. Following the documentary, Elizabeth Gray and Michael Enright discuss the difficulties of helping parents care for their disabled children in their own homes. Gray reads a letter from an official in the Kenora office of the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services who blamed the problems faced by the Wongs on the Association for Community Living in Fort Frances. <38mn 12s>
