Documentary about women’s prisons. It begins with actuality of male guards shouting at prisoners in the Prison for Women (P4W) in Kingston, Ontario, during a riot in April 1994. Footage of the treatment of the women during the disturbance prompted an investigation of conditions at the prison. There has been violence in other women’s prisons in Canada. A major issue is that many of the prisoners are aboriginal women. There are new solutions to the incarceration of women, particularly aboriginal women, arising after Louise Arbour’s report on P4W. Elizabeth Gray visits the Healing Lodge in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan. Interviewees include: Norma Green, a Dakota Sioux and the director of the Healing Lodge in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan; other staff of the healing lodge; residents of the healing lodge; former P4W inmates such as Brenda Morrison and Yvonne Johnston, and Mohawk author and lawyer Trish Montour Angus, an active and spokesperson for aboriginal women. Brenda Morrison was shown in the video footage of the riot in P4W. The healing lodge is designed to be a place where aboriginal women can heal and inmate suicides can be prevented. The documentary ends with the reading of the names of the women who died in P4W. <25mn 7s>
