Documentary about Crimea. Ukraine is about to hold the first free elections of the post-Soviet era. Crimea, a part of the Ukraine, led by President Yuri Meshov, may decide to rejoin Russia or at least be able to have dual citizenship or an economic union. Ukraine’s leader objects. People in the Crimea resent being forced to speak Ukrainian instead of Russian. Some also want to keep the Russian ruble, rather than being forced to use Ukrainian currency. Others fear what will happen with electricity, because Ukraine supplies most of Crimea’s power. Other subjects discussed include: support for the economic independence of Ukraine but not a severance of ties with Russia; the head of Crimean tourism and a parliamentary candidate; Yuri Meshkov and his campaign for some form of economic union between Crimea and Russia; the higher rate of inflation in Ukraine than in Russia; Crimeans concerned that their standard of living has fallen; the pace of change; power shortages; concerns that Ukraine cannot survive without Russia; the opposition of the Tatars (Crimea’s native people) to union with Russia; possible tension between ethnic and religious minorities; and comparisons with the trouble in Bosnia. Interviewees include: a school vice-principal; President Yui Meshov; a man who runs the service bureau at the Yalta Hotel; a politician; some school teachers; a street violinist who complains about having to use Ukrainian currency; and Tatar leader [Mustafa Gemiliev]. <17mn 20s>
