Documentary about four Canadians of Ukrainian descent who go back to Ukraine to help the new country. They are: lawyer Helena Freeland, age 46, whose parents fled the Soviet regime to Poland and then immigrated to Edmonton, Alberta 44 years ago; her daughter Chrystia Freeland; Helen’s brother Bodan Chomiak, a farmer with a career in agricultural development; and family friend Bogdan Krawchenko. Helen runs the Ukrainian Legal Foundation, which is working to set up a legal system in Ukraine. Chomiak is running a program to train farmers. Krawchenko is running a new Institute for Public Administration. Chrystia is a full-time correspondent for The Financial Times and The Economist. Subjects discussed include: problems Ukrainian Canadians have felt in trying to fit in when they are in Ukraine; village life; corruption; the myth of a national Ukrainian identity; a post-Soviet society reconstructing itself; the disillusionment of the Ukrainian-Canadians who found little left of the Ukrainian culture they grew up in as Canadians; their disillusionment with the lack of action of the Ukrainian-Canadian lobby; Ukraine’s increasing disappointment in the Ukrainian Canadian community because of the view that the Ukrainian Canadians are unable give them expert advice on such problems as currency reform; the need for Western businesses to provide real support, not prop up ailing industries and ailing governments; the need to establish a legal profession and the rule of law; efforts to establish a new law school and resentment from some native Ukrainians about this; Ukraine’s fear of Russia; and Canada’s lack of a clear foreign policy towards Ukraine. <19mn 25s>
