SUNDAY MORNING correspondent Elizabeth Gray reports from Tashkent about the situation in Uzbekistan, a former Soviet republic. Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan were part of a larger region and did not have distinct cultural identities before 1924, when the Soviet Union made then into individual republics. Subjects discussed include: searching for a national identity; roots in Turkestan; the region’s religious and cultural roots; the new political and religious freedom; Russian residents of Uzbekistan, some of who have assimilated into Uzbek society, learning the Uzbek language, and others who have not; the growing power of Islam, the state religion in Uzbekistan; promoting the Uzbek language instead of the Russian language in the schools; making the Uzbek language the language of the workplace; the government’s closure of schools in Tashkent; the cost of living and difficult living conditions; the struggle for democracy in Uzbekistan; student support for democracy; the government’s efforts to quell dissent; the government’s efforts to win Western support by pretending to bring in democratic reforms; Abdurahim Pulatov, the leader of Birlik, which is an opposition party; and the rise of Muslim fundamentalism. Interviewees include: the deputy minister of education for Uzbekistan; a translator and English teacher; a magazine editor of Russian descent; two Tashkent University students and a Russian journalist. Included is actuality of an English lesson at a school in Tashkent and a gathering of more than 1,000 Muslims to elect a new mufti. <28mn 30s>
