Documentary about political instability in the Republic of Georgia. Subjects discussed include: fighting in South Ossetia; instability in the Republic of Georgia; a recent attempt to take over the state television station; violence on the streets of the Georgian capital, Tblisi; difficult living conditions in Georgia; whether the government controls the military; confusion over who is in charge in Georgia; efforts by Eduard Shevardnadze to keep the country together; suspicion of Shevardnadze because of the people he jailed when he was First Party Secretary; support for and opposition to Shevardnadze; suspicion and fear of Russia; and the conflicting signals sent by the Russian government, alternating conciliatory gestures and threats. Interviewees include: a member of the state council; an advisor to Shevardnadze; a newspaper editor and the leader of Georgia’s Republican Party; a filmmaker; Georgia’s deputy foreign minister; and Nodor Natadze, longtime Georgian dissident and leader of the popular front. <16mn 58s>
