On 19 August 1991, Communist hardliners Gennady Yanayev, Dimitri Yazov, Vladimir Kryuchkov, Alexander Tizyakov, Oleg Baklanov, Vasily Starodubtsev, Boris Pugo and Valentin Pavlov overthrew Mikhail Gorbachev, President of the Soviet Union and General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and replaced him with Gennady Yanayev. ~4. On 19 August 1991, Russian President Boris Yeltsin climbed on top of a tank outside the Russian Parliament in Moscow and called for the Russian people to oppose the coup. ~5. On 21 August 1991 the coup attempt collapsed. The next day, Mikhail Gorbachev arrived back in Moscow after being held prisoner for 72 hours during the coup attempt. On 24 August 1991 Gorbachev resigned from the Communist Party. He remained President of the Soviet Union until the end of December 1991.
