This is a documentary by SUNDAY MORNING’s Moscow producer Elizabeth Gray on the significance of the votes cast by Russian immigrants in the election in Israel. Russian immigrants constitute ten percent of the population of Israel. Subjects discussed include: the difference between earlier waves of Russian immigrants who came to Israel because of their support for Zionism and their religious convictions and more recent Russian immigrants who are not religious or nationalist and whose chief motivation is the search for a better life; and the lives led by the immigrants in Israel; unemployment among the immigrants; plans by some immigrants to leave Israel and go to the United States; election issues; the election campaign; problems faced by the Russian immigrants; friction between the native Israelis and the Russian immigrants; friction with Israeli supporters of religious parties; and whether the Russian immigrants can help change Israeli society. Some of the newer immigrants are not doing very well economically. Others are getting involved in the political process. Interviewees include: former Russian dissident Natan Scharansky, who has been in Israel since 1986; [Barouk Gur], who works for the Jewish agency who works to bring Jewish immigrants to Israel; some Russian musicians; a young Russian woman living in a trailer park in the Negev desert, who comments that the living conditions are not what she expected; a refusenik who formed his own party to bring the problems of the Russian immigrants to the forefront; and immigrant Sergei Makarov and his wife Lena, who were surprised to learn when they were brought to their new home that they were living on land formerly occupied by Palestinians. There is actuality of Sergei Makarov singing and another clip of a string quartet playing. Scharansky speculates on the impact the Russian vote will have in the election. <20mn 13s>
