Documentary about the election of Tadeusz Mazowiecki of Solidarity as Prime Minister of Poland. This makes Poland’s Communist Party the first ruling party in the Eastern bloc to voluntarily relinquish power. Solidarity leaders state that they want a partnership with the Communists, not confrontation. Reporter Elizabeth Gray outlines major events leading to this. Interviewees include: the Solidarity party’s chief spokesperson and now an elected Member of Parliament Janusz Onysz, journalist Eva Boniketsa (wife of McMaster political scientist Adam Bromke) and Dariuzs Rosati, an economist with the Foreign Trade Research Institute, the largest independent institute in Poland. Subjects discussed include: the political changes occurring in Poland; the difficulty of moving to a free market economy; the government’s inexperience; the challenges facing Poland and the danger of instability in Poland and the rest of eastern Europe. Included is actuality of proceedings of the Polish parliament on 24 August 1989 and someone playing Chopin in a park. <14mn 47s>
