Report by SUNDAY MORNING producers Michael Finlay and Elizabeth Gray about the Soviet Union four years after Glasnost began. The actuality includes a song by Vladimir Vysotsky, whose music was banned until recently because of the songs he wrote about life as it really was. Subjects discussed include: Perestroika and the struggle to implement it; the role of the news media in promoting Perestroika; support felt by many people for the greater openness in Russia society; the broadcast of a documentary about Soviet history; the rapid decline of the Russian economy; changing from production quotas to quality control; the view that Mikhail Gorbachev will soon have to produce tangible results out of Glasnost and Perestroika; public support for the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan; the recent ethnic troubles in Armenia and Azerbaijan and concerns that news about the disturbances are being covered up; demonstrations in Yerevan; and the treatment of refuseniks. Interviewees include: an adviser to Mikhail Gorbachev; ordinary Russian citizens; two theatre students named [Masha Keder] and [Ravil Isyanov]; journalist Martin Walker of The Guardian; Boris [Korolyov] of the Moscow News; and Vitaly Koratich, editor of Oganyuk magazine. Actuality includes: the sound of stepping soldiers outside Lenin’s tomb in Red Square; young people singing a Beatles song on the Arbat, a pedestrian mall in Moscow; and people singing at a restaurant. <31mn 8s>
