This item begins with actuality of South African President P.W. Botha announcing a nationwide state of emergency. The hosts of the CBC radio series SUNDAY MORNING outline the situation in South Africa. The South African government declared the state of emergency in response to the death of a white journalist named George De’ath. Host Dale Goldhawk speaks to Elizabeth Gray who is in South Africa, about what is happening there now. They discuss the restrictions on journalists trying to report from South Africa. Next, SUNDAY MORNING presents a documentary by Elizabeth Gray on the week’s events in South Africa. Subjects covered include: efforts by the South African government to pass security legislation; debate in the South African parliament; opposition parliamentarians detained by the government; violence against the residents of the Crossroads settlement in Cape Town; political co-option as a tactic of the government; and a police crackdown of a gathering of protesters. Interviewed are politicians Helen Suzman and David Dalling. After the documentary, Goldhawk continues to talk to Gray about the week’s events in South Africa. <20mn 51s>
