Speech given by the Rt. Honourable Kim Campbell to the Annual Luncheon of the World Affairs Council of Cincinnati, on October 13, 1999 at the Omni Netherland Plaza Hotel in Cincinnati. The event was held in honour of the fifty-fourth anniversary of the United Nations and was sponsored by Cognis Inc. Following remarks by unidentified persons and introduction of George Costaris, Manager of Political, Economic Relations and Public Affairs at the Canadian Consulate General in Detroit, Ms. Campbell spoke, then answered questions. Subjects of the speech included challenges in the trading relationship between Canada and the United States, especially managing the border; economic, political and cultural impacts of the North American Free Trade Agreement; environmental concerns; expanding free trade connections; history of the trading relationship between Canada and the United States; North America in world relationships; the importance of the United Nations to North America; the North American model of ethnic integration; support of the United Nations by North Americans; and technology as problem or solution. Subjects of questions and answers included Canadians' expectations of the state, Canadians' knowledge of history; a common North American currency; conditions for intervention to protect human rights in other countries; free trade and protectionism; managerial talent in Canada; NATO and EU expansion to eastern Europe; and Quebec secession. <55mn>
