Recording of the first workshop of the 1982 National Conference of the Committee for the Canadianization of the Petroleum Industry titled Is Canadianization Beneficial –- Self-Sufficiency. Opening address is given by author Robert Laxer and the speakers are: former Saskatchewan Premier Tommy Douglas; former Minister of Finance Walter Gordon; the chairman of the Committee for an Independent Canada Mel Hurtig; and the President of the Ontario Energy Corporation Malcolm Rowan. Included subjects are the Canadianization of the Canadian petroleum industry, the National Energy Program, the Canadian ownership of oil and natural gas, the impact of energy control on the economy, criticisms of the industry and the U.S. government views on the matter, statistics on the profits made by the industry, investments in Petro-Canada, details of the Ontario government’s investments in Suncor, and the high price to pay for a massive Canadianization of the petroleum industry.
