Item is a report written by Peter Murdoch about an experimental housing project he supervised at Povungnituk in Northern Quebec during the summer of 1958. Murdoch worked for the Projects Section of the Arctic Division, Northern Administration and Lands Branch, Department of Northern Affairs and National Resources. Report consists of 12 typed pages plus seven pages of 28 photographs (four photographs mounted on each page).

Textual section of report provides overview of construction process, including supplies, selection of candidates for houses, building site, hiring of workers, types of construction used, financing, floor covering and heating, and breakdown of labour and materials costs. Photographs document various stages of building construction and are accompanied by brief captions.

The original version of the report was created in 1958 by the Projects Section, Arctic Division, Northern Administration and Lands Branch, Department of Northern Affairs and National Resources. Six copies of the completed report and accompanying photographs were sent to the Department of National Health and Welfare in 1958. Health and Welfare then sent the material to Alaska's provincial Health Service as part of a broader bilateral knowledge exchange program on low-cost dwellings for indigenous communities in Arctic regions.

This particular version of the report is one of the copies that were made available to the Alaskan government. It was transferred to the University of Alaska Fairbanks library in 1958. It was bound while in the custody of the library and the Alaskan archivist incorrectly indicated on a label used to identify the item that the Indian and Northern Health Services Directorate (then part of the Department of National Health and Welfare) had been responsible for its creation.

The report was deaccessioned from the circulating stacks of the University of Alaska Fairbanks library and received by Library and Archives Canada in 2008, after LAC was made aware of the existence of the report through a posting on the Association of Canadian archivists listserv.
