This map comes from one of the volumes of Moses Pitt's abortive attempt to publish a magnificent multi volume: English Atlas; made up of all new original maps. Only four volumes of the atlas were ever published and this map was the only original, the rest being based on Jansson and Visscher. The exceptionally clean engraving and the beautiful, if somewhat erroneous, illustrations make the map unique. The level of geographical exactitude on Pitt's maps was supposed to be absolutely up to date and it was probably the responsibility of Robert Hooke of the Royal Society, and one of Pitt's patrons, to ensure the accuracy. Most of the information is very accurate, however "Freesland", a 16th century misconception, still finds a home on this map. The N.M.C. holds two copies of this map, one of which is hand coloured, and bears extensive damage to the illustration.
