St. François Xavier, Manitoba is about 25 km west of the city of Winnipeg on the Assiniboine River. It began in the lee of a ridge on the prairie. Initially, it was named Grantown after its founder Cuthbert Grant (a Métis) who settled there in 1824. He was soon joined by many Métis families. St. François Xavier was also named the White Horse Plains (La Prairie du Cheval Blanc). The ridge itself was called the Coteau de Festin and it was a gathering place for the First Nations' celebrations.
