Telesat Canada was established in 1969 by Act of Parliament. It is not a crown corporation, but rather a commercial company partly owned by the Government of Canada. The first satellite, Anik I, was launched in 1972 and is designed to provide television and radio service to many parts of Canada not previously served, to provide telephone communication in northern Canada, and to supplement existing microwave systems in southern Canada. Anik I was the world's first domestic synchronous communications satellite. The map on page 24 illustrates the services supplied by Telesat Canada.
