Article 5 of the Treaty of Ghent empowered the commissioners to survey and mark the boundary from the source of the St. Croix to the St. Lawrence and in 1817 two survey parties were instructed to begin. Bouchette wa instructed to make a reconnaissance along the "due north line" and the American party was to survey it. The results were brought together in 1821.
Shows the supposed Highlands of the Boundary dispute and a proposed boundary from the intersection of the "line north of the St. Croix" and the Ristook [Arroostock] river, and hence to the source of the ristook and then west to the Highlands.
