This map is the most recent of a series of maps held by the N.M.C. first published in 1876 concerned with telegraphic communications and navigational aids in the area of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. In 1917 this system was very highly developed and by comparing the successive maps a clear picture of the evolution of the system emerges. Telegraph lines and cables, electro-signal stations, lighthouses, storm signal stations, fog horns, etc., are shown. Most submarine cables are named and dated. There is a table of distances and a list of regulations concerning communications between ships and coastal stations.
