This survey map depicts the parish of St. Francois Xavier, to the west of present-day Winnipeg. It shows woodland, prairie and meadowland, and land under cultivation. Also shows buildings identifying post office, H.B. Co. posts, and the R.C. Mission. As is typical of Métis settlements, the land is divided into long and narrow river lots. The parish of St. Francois Xavier was a Métis community that developed as a rendezvous of the buffalo hunt. Its Roman Catholic mission was founded in 1824, but it continued to be closely associated with the seasonal buffalo hunt for much of its history.
