This map shows all submarine cables, and land cables in countries where the telegraph network is not highly developed. The nationality of each line is given by a colour code. Proposed cables are shown as dotted lines. The N.M.C. also holds a copy of this map corrected to 1913. The fact that this map was proposed by the War Office reflects an awareness of the importance of telegraphic communications in strategic planning. Strategic considerations were foremost in the minds of proponents of the "All-Red Route", the globe-circling telegraph system touching only British processions, which was completed in 1902.
