This is the third known state of this map of North and South America. The first two states were published before 1747 and bore the plate number 138. The second state shows "The Great Fishing Bank" off Newfoundland. The third state also shows this feature but in addition indicates "Assenpolis L." northwest of Lake Superior, the northwest continuation of the California coast, Easter Island and other smaller features not present on either the first or second state. The third state was published twice; once in 1747 in A complete system of Geography and again in 1752 in A complete Atlas..., both times appearing as plate 51. This third state is listed in most carto-bibliographies, however the first two states seem to be unknown and the atlas or atlases in which they originated has not been determined. The N.M.C. holds two copies of the third state, one of which appears in a copy of A Complete Atlas .... A copy of the first and second state is also held.
