This map of North America is derived for the most part from Bellin's "Carte de l'Amerique Septentionale...1743." Lake Superior is greatly distorted, the ficticious Riv. de l'Ouest is shown draining towards the Pacific. The most fanciful feature on the map is the river system to the west of Hudson Bay. This system first made its appearance on the map published in 1753 by Phillippe Buache entitled "Carte des Nouvelles Decouvertes..." The River network was developed from a letter from Admiral Bartholomew de Fonte" concerning his discoveries in the course of a voyage from Callao, Peru, to find out if there was any northwest passage betwen the Atlantic Ocean and the South and Tartarian seas." (Wagner, vol. I, p. 158). Fonte's route gained populatiry and was the subject of great debate in the mid-eighteenth century.
