Although this map has given rise to more controversy than any of its contemporaries, the authorship and date were long accepted, since both appeared on the map: "Juan de la cosa la fizo en el puerto de S: mj" en ano de 1500," Now, even these facts are in dispute. In 1946 George Nunn wrote: "Our La Cosa map is not the original but only a copy, and it may be a copy more than once removed...the writer thinks the map represents information not earlier than about 1508-10."
