Collection search - [Manuscript map of North America and the Arctic regions,] bearing at the side the inscription "Humfrey Gylbert knight his charte". Lower down isthe astronomical symbol for Mercury, which was the personal mark of Dr. John Dee. Miss Taylor suggests that this is the map described by Dee in a list of his manuscript writings in the British Museum as "Hemispaeri Borealis geographica atque Hydrographica descriptio: longe a vulgatis chartis navigationem instituentibus dono data, An. 1583." Wagner believes that the map was produced in 1576. Certainly it was drawn before Giblert went on his last voyage to Newfoundland, in 1583. In 1937, Wagner reported the map to be in the possession of W.E. Elkins, of Philadelphia. [cartographic material]
