(From: Barbara McCorkle: Map Curator, Yale Univ.) 18 June 1987. Dear Ed: Identifying your little map was, as they say, a "piece of cake". It first appeared in 1742 in the 2nd edition of Johann Hubner's: New and Easy Introduction to the Study of Geography...London, T. Cox and J. Hodges. The first edition of this book, incidentally, had no maps. The map was used again in eidtion of 1746, 1753, 1757 and 1777. The page # engraved at the top right, above the border, did not change, so it is not possible to tell which of the editions it appeared in. It is also possible that the map plate was used in other publications, but I know only of its use in the 18th-century geography books I work on.
