Guillaume De l'Isle first published this map in 1714 in order to show more clearly the arctic lands, especially those along the north coast of Asia. De l'Isle's map was republished several times between 1714 and [1780] by a number of different publishers. This copy by Covens and Mortier apparently comes from either the 1730 or 1733 edition of their: Atlas Nouveau.... In both, the map appeared as plate 2 (Phillips nos. 580, 3486 and 3487). The map is very similar to the original 1714 edition, no new discoveries having been added. Then N.M.C. holds two other variant copies of De l'Isle's map: One is a copy in the untitled collection of De l'Isle maps published by Covens and Mortier circa 1740. This map bears notes dated 1740, incorporates new material as a result of the Kyrilow map, and gives notes in both French and Dutch. The map itself, however, was probably published in 1741. The second variant is a copy published circa 1745 by R. & J. Ottens in L. Renard's: Atlas van zeevaert in koophandel door de geheele weereldt.... This copy also has the same information, dated 1740, on the Covens and Mortier map. Further changes were made to the map content however, and many notes have been eliminated.
