Part of a film about the manufacture of chocolates and biscuits in Toronto . Part One is entitled CANDIED DAINTIES and shows the manufacture of chocolates. The first intertitle reads: "Making soda biscuits, sweet biscuits and confectionery ranks fifth in the industries of Ontario giving employment directly and indirectly to over fourteen thousand persons". The next intertitle explains that the capital invested in this industry is more than 28 million dollars and the value of production for one year is more than 46 million. The next intertitle says: "Cocoa beans for the manufacturing of chocolate confections are imported from Ceylon, Trinidad and other warm countries." Footage shows a hands scooping up beans from a sack. An intertitle explains that cocoa beans are cleaned and roasted, and the outer hulls are removed. Footage shows beans on a conveyor belt. A man opens the door to a cylindrical vat and beans pour out. The machinery is shown in close-up. The beans are rich in cocoa butter and when ground they become liquid. Footage shows machinery revolving and liquid cocoa beans pouring out. An intertitle explains that sugar is added and the mixture passes through the refining process to give it a velvety smooth texture. Footage shows the mixture coming out of the machinery. Women workers sort the nuts used for the nut centres of the chocolates. Nuts are shown on a conveyor belt. Nuts are added to a vat of chocolate, for use in chocolate bars. Chocolate bars bounce along a conveyor belt and the intertitle explains that the bars are agitated while cooling to remove air bubbles and to settle the chocolate. A worker stacks blocks of several chocolate bars. Wrapped bars come off a conveyor belt and women put them into boxes. An intertitle states: "Other forms of chocolate confection". A machine squirts out rows of small round chocolate swirls. The next intertitle reads: "Mixing the fondant for the better grades of soft centre chocolates". Footage shows a mixing machinespinning. A man operates machinery to mould the chocolate centres. Various types of factory machinery are in motion. There is a close-up of a woman worker dipping cherry centres in fondant before they are chocolate coated (the worker's face is not shown). The next intertitle says "Nothing can equal the skilled operator for coating the better grade of fancy chocolates". Women are shown hand-dipping the chocolates. The next sequence shows the process of coating chocolates by machinery. Rows of candies move along a conveyor belt as chocolate is poured over them. Women pack the chocolates into boxes. Chocolate boxes are shown in close-up as they move slowly along a conveyor belt. An intertitle explains that the chocolate boxes are "accurately weighed and alluringly packed to intrigue the fancy of the most fastidious". A woman weighs chocolate boxes and adds a chocolate to one box. Next, the boxes are sealed. The boxes are illustrated with the image of a woman's face and one such box is shown in close-up. In the final sequence, a chocolate box is being held by a man behind is back. He is facing a young woman. He hands the box to the girl and she embraces him, raising one foot behind her. The final shot is of her raised foot. Lastly is a logo reading "Province of Ontario Pictures, End of Part One, Hon. W.H. Price, KC, Minister, G.E. Patton, Director". ~Part 2 is entitled FRESH FROM THE OVENS and it shows the manufacture of biscuits and other such baked goods. The first shot after the head title is a close-up of a young woman looking at the camera as she eats a biscuit. An intertitle reads: "In the manufacturing of biscuits the flour is sifted and the dough is mixed just as mother used to do it but more scientifically and in vast quantities." Footage shows sacks of flour and a man emptying a bag of flour into a machine. A machine with turning blades is shown next. An intertitle says "Automatic soda biscuit machines". A man rolls dough through a machine and other men move sheets of dough through various machines. A revolving brush removes all surplus flour. A strip of dough emerges from a machine and an intertitle explains that trim "from the edges is cast aside". Men put dough on large trays and put them into electric revolving ovens. An intertitle explains that the ovens "are maintained at an unvarying temperature and timed to a second to produce product uniformity". More shots follow of workers putting trays in the oven and taking other trays out. One man breaks the soda biscuits into smaller strips. The next intertitle, "Making dainty cream wafer", introduces a shot of some creamy material spread in large circles in machinery that resembles a large waffle iron. A man then takes a tray out of this machine. An intertitle says "Putting in that tasty ice cream filling". Workers feed trays through another machine. A woman worker packs wafers into a box. The next intertitle reads: "Icing animal crackers to please the kiddies". Woman stand at a conveyor belt full of animal crackers. Next shown are boxes on a conveyor belt and a woman packing the cookies into a box. An intertitle reads: "Packed in air tight containers they come to you crisp and flaky and with all the fragrant aroma and delicate flavor retained". Woman workers are shown with the finished boxes on an assembly line. Next, a woman puts a box of cookies on a table, A boy peeks around a corner. Next, the boy grabs a cookie and eats it. Lastly is a logo reading "Province of Ontario Pictures, End of Part One, Hon. W.H. Price, KC, Minister, G.E. Patton, Director". <11mn 56s>
