This double-hemisphere map shows the northern and southern hemispheres. Major existing submarine and land telegraph cables are shown as are proposed and abandoned cables. Beneath the maps are charts giving the approximate distances and historical dates of some of the principal submarine cable routes. A note at the bottom right of the map reads: "An examination of the spheres with the foregoing table of distances, demonstrates that the shortest cable route between Great Britain and China, and also between Great Britain and her Australian Colonies, is via the Dominion of Canada and the Pacific Ocean". It appears, however, that the authors of the map had second thoughts, for the phrase referring to Australia has been neatly stroked off.
The map reflects Canada's vision of herself as the principal link between Great Britain and those parts of the Empire bordering the western Pacific. The route shown for the Pacific Cable was suggested by Sandford Fleming in 1879. It was believed at the time that a more southerly and direct route would be impossible because of the greater depth and severity of the ocean floor. When research disproved this, the northerly route shown here was abandoned. (See Burpee).
