This map was first conceived by De l'Isle in 1714 and was published to show more clearly the Arctic lands, especially those along the north coast of Asia. De l'Isle's map was republished several times between 1714 and [1780] by a number of different publishers, each of whom added certain material or made revisions. This copy was published by Reiner and Josua Ottens in their 1745 publication of a group of Louis Renard's maps entitled: Atlas von zeevaert in koophandel door de geheele weereldt.... Renard had not included this map as one of his own in his previous atlases. However, R. & J. Ottens added it to Renard's plates for the 1745 work. Like the [1740] Covens and Mortier edition, this map also bears the information concerning the Kyrilow map, the Swartz letter of January 1740, and the explorations of Spanberg. The notes on the Otten's map however are much less lengthy than those by Covens and Mortier.
The content of the map is also slightly different from other editions, most of the changes being found along the north and east coasts of Russia. The N.M.C. holds several other variant copies of this map, both published by Covens and Mortier. The first is a copy from either the 1730 or 1733 edition of: Atlas Nouveau... This map is probably very similar to the original 1714 edition. The second copy held is located in a bound compilation of De l'Isle maps; probably amassed either by De l'Isle himself of by Covens and Mortier and dated approximately 1740. Evidence indicates, however, that the map probably first appeared in a 1741 edition of: Atlas Nouveau.... This map bears corrections as a result of the Kyrilow map of 1734 and also reproduces the Swartz letter of January 1740.
A copy apparently based on the original is located in Jean Frederic Bernard's Recueil de Voyages au Nord, Tome 1, 1717.
