This is the first printed map specifically devoted to the New World to appear in an atlas. The map follows the Atlantic seaboard, showing a continuous coastline stretching from 35° south latitude, where the mouth of the Rio de la Plata lies, to the latitude of the St. Lawrence River in North America. The map forms what appears to be a complete Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Seaboard. South America is labelled Terra Incognita, and one can see the islands of Cuba (Isabella), Hispaniola (Spagnolla), Jamaica (Iamaiqua), the Virgin Islands (La Onze Mil Virgenes) and Puerto Rico (Borinquen) on what the cartographer calls Oceanus Occidentalis, the Western Ocean. An inscription indicates that the land and the islands on the map were discovered by Christopher Columbus by order of the King of Castille.

In: Ptolemy: Geographia, Strassburg, 1513. This map is sometimes called the "Admiral's Map" ascribed to Columbus himself. (Skelton: Introduction ... 513, front flap). Though the map is not signed, Skelton: after surveying the scattered and sometimes contradictory evidence sees no serious reason to doubt that Martin Waldsemüller designed it. (Skelton: Introduction ...1513, p. XX.) This map appeared also in: Ptolemy: Geographia, Strassburg, 1520.
