This map shows the physical features of North America and the locations of European colonies; the north west of the continent is left blank. Indian settlements and place names appear on the map. Jaillot took over the Sanson plates and based his map on "Amérique Septentrionale" a map of 1650 by Nicolas Sanson. Jaillot improved his model, adding accurate information for the Great Lakes and showing California in transition between island and peninsula. This map was first published in Atlas François contenant les cartes géographiques, fol. Paris, Jaillot, 1695-[1696] and afterwards in other editions: 1695, 1700-[1724].
Similar maps, also based on Sanson's but larger and with differences, had been published in Jaillot's Atlas nouveau between 1674 and 1695. On those maps, California is referred to as an island and the Great Lakes are in the 1650 form. The N.M.C. has the original 1650 map by Sanson and a group of those maps based on Sanson's work but published by Jaillot between 1614 and 1693.
