This is a very rare edition of the important De l'Isle map of 1700. The map is rare and curious as a result of the fact that the publisher, Pierre Mortier, ascribed the original to Nicolas Sanson, when it was well known that De l'Isle had in fact been the map's originator. According to R. V. Tooley the French edition bearing De l'Isle's name instead of Sanson's, and published by Mortier, appeared sometime between 1700 and 1708, it is therefore supposed that this map appeared during the same period. Research has failed to locate the provenance of the map. In fact, little is known of this particular edition. De l'Isle map remained a significant work for over eighty years and was republished innumerable times by a number of different map publishers.
