Sometime after the death of cartographer Nicolas Sanson in 1667, his plates passed into the hands of A.H. Jaillot. Jaillot enlarged and revised many of Sanson's early maps and published them under his own name and that of Sanson. "Amerique Septentrionale..." is a revised, enlarged version of Sanson's famous 1650 and 1656 maps of the same title. Jaillot first published the map in 1674, probably shortly after he came into possession of the Sanson plates. The map was also published in 1680, with numerous additions, by William Berry. Jaillot republished it again in 1685, 1690, 1692, 1695, 1696 and in a greatly revised version in 1719. This particular copy was published by Pierre Mortier between 1696 and 1708. In fact, the map published by "Pierre Mortier et Compagnie" may have appeared in separate form as early as 1690 or 1691.
The "compagnie" in the imprint refers to a partnership between Mortier and Marc Huguetan which was active between the years 1690 and 1692. It was during this period that "et Compagnie" was used in the imprint. Mortier retained possession of some of the plates when the partnership dissolved and this map seems to have been among them. The map shows California as an island and an early configuration for the Great Lakes. Lakes Superior and Michigan are shown with open western ends, thus holding out the possible existance of an inland Northwest Passage. As a result of the fact that this was based on the 1650 map, much of the information shown was out of the date by 1700. One curiosity is the fact that Montreal, shown on the 1650 and 1656 maps is not indicated. Finally note that the date of 1695 attributed by the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources is probably incorrect.
