Collection search - The Plan referred to in the humble petition of James Manger Holmes and others to Her Majesty the Queen [dealing with land affected by the building of the Rideau Canal, Ottawa]. [cartographic material]

Map was probably produced for a court case involving a "petition of right of several persons claiming a title under Colonel By to certain landsin Canada...which were originally taken for the purposes of the Rideau Canal Act which by a subsequent act so far as those lands were not used for the purposes of the Canal were required to be restored to the proprietors..." [Hill Collection 6275]. James Manger Holmes in 1856 received a Power of Attorney from Charles W. By (Hill Collection 5255) but this map is related to land he himself owned. At the time of the legal proceeding Holmes was living in Great Dunmon, County Essex, England. The map itself is not to scale and is oriented with south at the top. The date is derived from the date on the copy of the judgement: Nov/1861 [Hill Collection, 6275].
