Fire was a frequent occurrence in the wood cities of nineteen century Canada. This map shows the area of Quebec destroyed by the conflagration of June 1881. The fire destroyed some 995 wooden structures and over 300 of stone and brick and resulted in insurance losses of more than $800,000.00. More details of the fire may be found in the notes accompanying this map which is found in the journal: Insurance Society for 1881. As the journal was founded by Chas. E. Goad and the fact that Goad produced similar maps for fires in Toronto, Ottawa-Hull and Montreal, the authorship of the map has been attributed to him. Two copies of the map are held by the N.M.C.: one is in the journal, the other is a photographic reproduction. The later copy is a reduction: one should disregard the scale statement and use only the bar scale.
