In her dressing room, a wealthy woman is preparing to go out. Her young daughter is admiring her mother's things, in particular a certain bracelet which the mother tells her not to play with. The father enters to fetch the mother, who before leaving gives the daughter a final admonition about the bracelet. As soon as her parents have departed, however, the girl takes the bracelet to her own room, puts it on and begins to play with one of her dolls. Her governess enters, takes away the doll and tells her to do her studies, then leaves. Absent-mindedly, the girl drops the bracelet on the floor, then turns to her books and begins to study. The governess returns and calls the girl out of the room. Another young girl, obviously poor and very overworked, leaves the wealthy house carrying a huge basket of laundry. Returning with it to the laundry, her mother gives her a comforting hug and looks into the basket. The wealthy mother returns to her room and discovers the bracelet is missing. She rushes to the daughter's room but neither the daughter nor the governess admits to knowing its whereabouts. They begin to search for the bracelet and then the governess recalls the girl who had picked up the washing. She goes to the laundry and summons the girl and her mother. In the drawing room the wealthy couple accuse the poor girl of stealing the bracelet. She and her mother plead her innocence. Suddenly, the governess bursts in with the bracelet, which she has found. The daughter at last admits her guilt. She asks for and is granted the forgiveness of the poor girl. All are reconciled.
