A middle-aged couple are eating their breakfast when a maid enters with a newspaper which she hands to the husband. Opening it, he is pleased to find something, and hands it to his wife. What he shows her is an advertisement reading: "Shorthand clerk and typist required with knowledge of English and German. Apply between 9 and 10 am., Mr. Dupont, Rue des Vignerons." The man calls back the maid, has her fetch his hat and coat, and leaves. Several female applicants are already waiting when he arrives at his office. He summons the first of the applicants, a pretty young woman, into his office and tests first her stenographic and then her typing skills. It is quite obvious, however, that he is interested in more than just her secretarial skills. He makes it plain that he is pleased with her. Mme. Dupont arrives, looks over the applicants in the outer office, then bursts into the inner office where her husband is admiring the new girl as she works. She has a brief outburst of hysterics and then throws the new girl out. In the outer office, she surveys the other applicants, all of whom are rather homely, and selects the homliest, ushering her into Mr. Dupont's office. Mme. Dupont lets her husband know that this is his new secretary. Dupont is dismayed at his wife's selection, but has no choice but to accept.
